Renewable Energy in Bangladesh: Expectations vs. Reality

Renewable energy consists of energy that does not end up on consumption during human timeline. However, the usual forms of renewable energy are solar, hydro, biomass, wind, tidal and geo-thermal. The availability and capacity for utilization of these resources will determine how much of each form of the renewable energy forms can be exploited in a country.

In Bangladesh solar, wind and biomass as the only current options that we can utilize. Another fact is that Bangladesh does not have potentials for its geo-thermal and hydro energy that basically depends on elevation of its flow path, which is practically small. It thus leaves solar, wind and biomass as the only available practically usable options. The main drawback for biomass is the high demand of agricultural and animal wastes for cooking in rural areas. Also extracting too much organic matter in an unsustainable process could result in soil degradation. That would require careful planning and management of the bioresources that are presently available around us. Since the beginning of its concern, Bangladesh government has been giving high priority on renewable energy to ensure the country’s energy security with both sustainable (solar, wind, hydro, biomass, etc.) and conventional energy (oil, gas, coal, etc.) sources. It is expected that the government initiated various renewable energy-based schemes that could be beneficial for the country to encounter its policy goals for secure, reliable and affordable energy access to its people. In this regard BPDB and IDCOL have taken various methodical steps to implement the government’s renewable energy related projects to promote the energy efficiency of the country.

To conclude, it is clear that Bangladesh has been putting continuous effort to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix but the prospect of renewable energy in Bangladesh does not look very bright for this time being. The government need to take the steps to explore new and innovative ways of harnessing the renewable energy.
